"PONTRHYDYFEN is a village, in Michaelston Higher township, I miles north from Cwmavon, and has a station on the Great Western railway. There is a viaduct of five arches across the river at this place, connecting this parish with that of Margam. The Jerusalem Calvinistic Methodist chapel here was erected in 1826, and rebuilt in 1845 and 1876, and will seat 800 persons. There is also a Baptist chapel, erected in 1856 and rebuilt in 1906, with 400 sittings." [From Kelly's South Wales Directory 1923 (ArchiveCDBooks) - transcribed by Gareth Hicks]
