Is a respectable market town and township in the parish of its name, hundred of Tal y Bont and Mowddwy, in the county of Merioneth. 213 miles NW from London, 68 SE. from Holyhead, 62 SW from Chester, 10 W. from Dinas Mowddwy, and the like distance E. from Barmouth.

Pleasantly situated on the south bank of the river Wynion which is navigable for large boats to within about a mile of the town; and at the foot of the Cadir Idris a celebrated mountain towering to the height of 2,914 feet above the level of the sea forming an object of great attractions to visitors. The manufacture of a coarse kind of woollen cloth called 'Welch webs, or 'white plains,' undyed, and chiefly exported is carried out here extensively. The tanning and currying of leather, and glove making are also branches of some consequence and the general trade of the place is benefited by its situation of thoroughfare, having excellent roads diverging from hence to Carnarvon and Holyhead, and to Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury. Three good inns, two of which are posting-houses will be found to possess every accommodation required by the traveller or visitor.

G. H. Vaughan Esq., is lord of the manor - at his customary courts certain officers are appointed and the assizes for the county are held here in the Town-hall a neat building, as are sessions at Easter and Michaelmas. The places of worship are the parish church a neatly built, modern edifice and four chapels for dissenters. The living of Dolgelly is a rectory in the patronage of the crown, and Incumbency of the Rev Henry Weir-White.
