Help - Admin toolbar

Hide

The Admin Toolbar (a blue bar at the top of the window, which is always visible when you are logged in) even when you scroll down, usually has three main options showing in the blue bar. The three options are Manage, Shortcuts, and <Current User> (i.e. the name under which you logged in). Selecting one of these main options causes it to become underlined and an additional  (white or light blue background "lower bar") sub-menu to become visible on the line below, giving a range of sub-options. When you choose something under one of the sub-options the set of information displayed in the rest of the page under the toolbar changes appropriately; the sub-menu remains visible.)

Note: In fact the sub-menu that is described here as being in the lower bar will move to become a left hand column, if you narrow the browser window sufficiently. The sub-menu will return to under the  blue bar if the window width is increased. In fact there is a little button "|<-" which can be used to switch the sub-menu between horizontal and vertical. (This menu and sub-menu system is baked into the Drupal 8 system, so we have been able to have little influence over its behaviour.)

The 'Manage' Option

The Management menu is one provided by Drupal to access the many tasks needed to configure and manage the system. The items (sub-options) you see depend on the Drupal role assigned to you. GENUKI Maintainers will see very few items here. (Unfortunately, we cannot suppress this menu based upon role, even though Maintainers will rarely need to look in here.) The sub-options visible to Maintainers are:

  • "G" in a "tear-drop"-shape - if clicked this returns you to the GENUKI Home screen. If hovered over it reveals a "log out" facility.
  • Content - access to means of adding various forms of information content to GENUKI.
  • Reports - access to viewing several types of report, concerning usage of GENUKI.

The 'Shortcuts' Option

The shortcuts are a set of sub-menu items that we can configure to provide the tools that users may need to use and access frequently. We can define a number of different shortcut sets and assign a particular set to an individual user, though most users will normally see the Default set. This contains:

  • Add content - For creating new nodes. It provides a menu of the node types that you can use with links to create them.
  • All errors - We have software (called Spider2) running to check all your nodes for problems. This links to a geographically-ordered listing providing details of the numbers of nodes containing various different types of error.
  • All nodes - A listing of all our nodes in the geographical hierarchy showing who maintains what.
  • All media - A listing of all the media (e.g. photographs, PDFs) in a geographical hierarchy showing who maintains what.
  • Help - The link into our help information.

The 'Current User' Option

The option label here is your user name. From here you can access and manage your user profile and find listings with details on the information you maintain. The three buttons you can see having selected this option are 'View profile', 'Edit profile' and 'Logout'. (Drupal seems not to provide us the ability to modify this menu.) The main one to press is 'View profile' which as the name implies displays your user profile (contact details, responsibilities, etc.) in a format rather similar to viewing a node. Under the title (your user name) you will find a set of tabs which you can use to see various user screens, each with a different type of information or facility for you. These tabs are:

  • View - your user profile. This profile is also accessible via the link 'My account' near the left hand end of the blue GENUKI banner that shows on each GENUKI page. We have added a user-specific error report from Spider2 to your profile of just the nodes you maintain. (Unfortunately it is also currently appearing at the bottom of the other user screens as well.)
  • Edit - means of editing your user profile.
  • Logout - this is in fact one of three logout buttons. The others are at the right hand end of the blue GENUKI banner that shows on each GENUKI page, and at the left hand end of the Manage sub-menu!
