Welcome to Genuki, ENG, Lincolnshire Data provided by Renee REDSHAW, Aust. --------------------------------------------- Caistor is the home of the Gad whip, a fearsome object of 6 ft of stock and 7 ft of lash and was to be cracked by a tenant of the manor in the porch every year during the reading of a Palm Sunday lesson. The whip was next held over the vicar's head, then laid to rest in the manorial pew. The reason appears unknown but is presumed a penance for some ancient land dispute. The ceremony was last performed in 1846 and the whip now rests in a glass case. Next to the case is a stone, supposedly made of blood and bones from the Holy Land. --------------------------------------------- Added 26-December-2012
