Although I never thought about it at the time as I was only 8 or 9 and stayed with my grandparents in the school holidays. Every Friday my grandmother would dress up in the morning and take me "uptown" to the market and never used to buy anything but used to chat to people. Later on I realised she wanted to be seen. We came home for fish and chips from the shop on Heneage road and she then changed into her everyday clothes and caught the no 10 trolleybus to Freeman street when the serious shopping was done. I was always sent to queue for sausages at Birketts in Heneage road at 9 o'clock as that was the day they made them. Never tasted better sausages ever! Memories! John
