Compliments of: Alan R Moorhouse, Gloucestershire ------------------------------------------------------------- From The (London) Times July 17th 1908: PRIZES FOR LARGE FAMILIES At the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society's annual show, opened yesterday at Sleaford, prizes were offered to the agricultural labourers who had brought up and placed out the largest numbers of children, without having received parochial relief. The first prize of £4 went to George Farmery, of Hemswell, Lincoln, who had 23 children, 17 of whom were brought up, and 14 placed out. The second prize went to John Elsey, of Lusby, near Spilsby, who had 14 children, 14 of whom were brought up, and 11 placed out. The third prize-winner was William Bell, of Croxby, Caistor, with 14 children born, 11 brought up, and the same number placed out. The five men competing in the class had a total of 78 children. -------------------------------------------------------------- [George FARMERY was born at Faldingworth in 1841, twin son of George FARMERY (born Walesby 1791) and his second wife Sarah; George senior himself had 13 children with his two wives Anne (PUTTERGILL) and Sarah (HANDSON born 1795 Cockerington). George junior was a carter at Snarford in 1861 and in 1862 (Jun qrt Lincoln RD) married Ann (born 1845 Faldingworth); their known children were Elizabeth Ann 1863, George William 1864, Mary Alice 1865, David 1868, John Robert 1871 and Charlotte 1873 (all born Faldingworth). Ann was buried at Faldingworth in 1877, aged 32, and in 1878 widower George FARMERY, of full age, married at Faldingworth to 17 year old Lucy Ann MASSINGHAM, daughter of William MASSINGHAM, grocer; they were both of Faldingworth. Lucy was born at Navenby about 1860. Known children to this second marriage were Gertrude Eleanor 1879 (born Faldingworth), Amelia 1882, William Henry 1884 (baptised Sunday 10.2.1884 "Septua Gestina"), Walter R 1885, Frank 1888 (all born Hemswell), Chrysice/Chryssie born 1890 Bonsdall, Leonard 1893 and Herbert 1896 (both born Kirton in Lindsey) and Lilian born 1898 Harpswell. The family were at Faldingworth in 1871, Hemswell 1881, 2 Bonsdall House, Corringham 1891 and Hemswell 1901. George died at Hemswell in 1918 age 76 and Lucy Ann at Hemswell in 1940 age 79; they were both buried there with a headstone.] ------------------------------------------------- *** Last revised: 18-March-2005 ***
