From: Dorothy Gaunt Register of the Anglican Church at Hibaldstow ------------------------------------------- Trawling through the registers of Hibbaldstow (looking for COWLINGS), I came across a couple of entries that I have to share... In the mid 18th century, the Parish Clerk (Edward Watson) obviously fancied himself as a master of penmanship. Interspersed with the bdm entries, he's included bits of local news, all embellished with spirals, curlecues, and fancy lettering, etc etc. In 1749 there was an outbreak of disease in the cattle of the parish (388 were lost, with a list of each farmer's losses noted by Edward). After the list, he goes on to say "But before this said Distemper amongst the Horned Cattle, And that Unnatural Rebellion which broke out in Scotland, There appeared a Comet or Blazing Star in Shape like a Rod, and was seen every Evening Westwardly, and in the morning Eastwardly for a Considerable Space of time when as the Air was clear. This was written by me Edwd Watson Parish Clark [sic] with Design to let Generations that Come after know the wonderful Works and Power of Almighty God which he hath done in this our time." In 1765, there was this entry: "Joseph Bacon of the Parish of Bonby had a cow Delivered of Four Calves in the forenoon of the month of May 1765 as by the Old Stile. Two of them of ye she kind, two he kind, but all died and ye cow also". ----------------------------------------------- Baptisms: Marriages: 1804 Thomas METCALFE and Catherine HUSBAND ----------------------------------------------- *** Last revised: 5-August-2008 ***
