Compliments of: Denny (Langley BC Canada) ------------------------------------------------- According to The Board of Guardians of the Poor, Spilsby Union, Martha LOWE and her two illegitimate children [who are not named] had become chargeable to the Parish of Mavis Enderby, 25 Sep 1845. On 12 Sep 1845, the LRSM (Lincolnshire, Rutland and Stamford Mercury newspaper) reports that a summons was granted by the Magistrates Office, Spilsby 8 September, on the application of Martha LOWE of Halton Holgate, singlewoman, against Wm. CLARKE, of the same place, in bastardy. The subsequent issues of the LRSM were dedicated to the arrival of the railroad, and the outcome of the hearing is currently not known as it did not make it into print. An IGI Baptismal Extraction for Horncastle, 15 Jul 1846, identifies "Wood" as the son of Martha LOWE (no father). FreeBMD yields a birth, June quarter 1845: Wood LOWE, Spilsby Reg Dist, Vol 14, Page 587. Now to my problematic William LOWE. William is first identified via the 1851 census, age 7, enumerated in the Union Workhouse, Horncastle, born Hagworthingham. William is enumerated in the company of the above noted Wood, age 5, born Halton, Lincolnshire. Wood's mother, Martha, is enumerated in the household of of James PROCTOR, Spilsby Road, Horncastle, with a child identified as James Proctor LOWE, (with a relationship of Son with respect to Head of Household). An IGI Baptismal Extraction for Dalby, Lincolnshire, 24 Dec 1843, identifies William as the son of Martha Lowe (no father). Dalby is approximately 7 km east of Hagworthingham, 2 km north of Partney. I am aware of two possible GRO Birth extractions: William LOW, December quarter 1843, Horncastle RD, and William LOWE, June quarter 1842, Spilsby RD. (Hagworthingham is in the Horncastle RD; Dalby is in the Spilsby RD.) At this point, the trail seems to go dead for William, while it dies out for Wood following the 1861 Census. (Wood *may* be in the US of A for the 1870 Census.) ------------------------------------------------- *** Last revised: 30-July-2008 ***
