Welcome to Genuki, ENG, Nottinghamshire Data comp-liments of John MELLORS, UK -------------------------------------------- "Mary SHAW was buried 3 Dec 1769" - Extract from Register - Gamston St Peter p.53 This Stone is to the memory of Mary daughter of Richard and Olive SHAW who died in her 15th year 1769 Farewell vain world advice to thee I give Act uprightly while on the earth you live Don't dye your conscience with a scarlet red Nor take away the harmless orphan's bread A greedy man that could not be denied Took my possessions to uphold his pride My birthright's gone: My life is at an end Adieu fair world since God has proved my friend This epitaph, now illegible, is from the tombstone of a young girl Mary SHAW an orphanburied at Gamston and who it is said was defrauded of some property by her relatives or by some man. I could only make out a few words in 1881 but Nancy THEAKER the old clerk's wife recited this epitaph to me and toldme a long tale about the child which I could not quite understand -------------------------------------------- Added 21-February-2014
