BATTLES This file gives details of some of the battles that feature in the rightmost column of the main files 1ST JUNE 1794:- This is more commonly known as "The Glorious First of June" when a fleet of British ships under the command of Admiral Earl Howe in 'Queen Charlotte' (100 guns) engaged the Spanish fleets on 1st June 1794. The British ships involved were:- Caesar 80, Bellerophon 74 Leviathan 74 Royal Sovereign 100 Marlborough 74 Defence 74 Impregnable 98 Tremendous 74 Barfleur 98 Invincible 74 Culloden 74 Gibraltar 80 Brunswick 74 Valiant 74 Orion 74 Queen 98 Rammilles 74 Alfred 74 Montagu 74 Royal George 100 Majestic 74 Glory 98 Thunderer 74 Plus 7 smaller vessels. ST VINCENT:- The Battle of Cape St Vincent took place on 14th February 1797 when the British Commander was Admiral Sir John Jervis (later Earl St Vincent). CAMPERDOWN:- This sea battle was against the Dutch Fleet on 11th October 1797. The British Commander was Admiral Andrew Duncan. NILE:- This battle took place at Aboukir Bay a few miles northv east of Alexandria in Egypt on 1st August 1798 when the British Commander was Rear Admiral Sir H. Nelson. COPENHAGEN:- Against the Danes in the approaches to Copenhagen on 2nd April 1801 when Nelson - now Vice Admiral Lord Nelson - was in command. BASQUES ROADS:- This was a blockading action which lasted several weeks of the French Fleet in the Channel in June 1799. MARTINIQUE & GUADALOUPE:- These islands in the West Indies changed hands several times and there were several successful and unsuccessful attempts to capture and re-capture them. ALGIERS:- In 1816 the Dey of Algier took some 1,083 christian slaves. A force under Admiral Lord Exmouth therefore sailed from Plymouth on July 28th, met up with and joined a Dutch squadron at Gibraltar and thence proceeded in company to Algiers which they bombarded on August 27th 1816. In the course of the bombardment the flagship the Queen Charlotte fired 4,462 shot, and the Impregnable fired 6,730 shot. The eight other major vessels firing similar but lesser numbers of shot. The slaves were subsequently freed. NAVARINO:- The battle of Navarino was fought between a combined fleet of British, French and Russian ships against a combined force of Turkish & Egyptian vessels on 20th October 1827. The British Squadron was commanded by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington. SYRIA:- The British Fleet of some 22 ships was operating off the coast of Syria in 1840 under the command of Commodore Charles Napier in HMS Powerful (84 guns), and action occured around Beirut from about September 11th 1840, and Acre was bombarded on November 3rd 1840 culminating in the grand magazine ashore blowing up killing upwards of 1200 people. BONNE CITOYENNE:- This refers to the capture of the Furieuse by the Bonne Citoyenne on July 6th 1809. HEBRUS & ETOILE:- This refers to the capture of the ETOILE by the HEBRUS on 27th March 1814. AMETHYST with THETIS:- This refers to the capture of the Thetis by the Amethyst on November 10th 1808. SEAHORSE with BADERE:- This refers to the capture of the Badere Zaffer by the Seahorse on 6th July 1808.
