Will of Jemima Roberts, Spinster of Barnstaple

I Jemima Roberts of Barnstaple in the County of Devon Spinster do make and order this my last Will and Testament as follows ffirst I do humbly commit my soul into the hands of my blessed Redeemer hoping through his merits and ..... for pardon for all my sins I desire my body to be decently interred in my family Vault with the remains of my dear parents and relations I give and bequeath unto my two Brothers E R Roberts and Charles Roberts the sum of Two thousand pounds Upon Trust to lay out and invest the same at Interest in the public funds or on Mortgage and from time to time to change such securities as they may think proper and Upon Trust to pay out and transfer the said sum of Two thousand pounds and the interest and dividends unto my niece Julia Elizabeth Chanter to and for her separate use and benefit and independent of any Husband she may have I give and bequeath unto my Brother John Richards Roberts the sum of Three hundred pounds I give and bequeath unto my Brother Edward Richards Roberts the sum of Three hundred pounds I give unto my Niece Elizabeth Groyn the sum of Two hundred pounds I give unto my nephew Howel Groyn the sum of Two hundred pounds I give unto my Nephew John Roberts Chanter the sum of five hundred pounds I give unto my Niece Julia E Chanter the sum of one thousand pounds I give unto my Cousin Anna Brown the sum of one hundred pounds I give unto my Cousin Mary Roberts the sum of one hundred pounds I give unto my Cousin Elinor Exler the sum of one hundred pounds I give unto ffanny Dunn fifty pounds I give unto my friend Mary Dawson the sum of fifty pounds I give unto my Sister in Law Elizabeth Roberts the sum of twenty pounds also to my other Sister in Law Anna Roberts the like sum of twenty pounds to lay out in a small piece of Plate as a fitting remembrance of me I give unto my friend Miss Hale the sum of seventy pounds which she has paid me Interest for since my father's death & for which sum I have her note of hand for bequeathed me by my father and which I desire may be destroyed in her presence by my Executors that she may never be called on for principal and interest from the time of my decease but should the said Miss Hale be deceased before me I revoke my legacy of seventy pounds I give unto my servant Betty Yeo if living with me at the time of my decease the sum of fifty pounds also to my servant Mary Jones if living with me at the time of my decease the sum of forty pounds I give unto my two old friends Harriet and Maria Cook the sum of fifty pounds I give and bequeath unto Charles Roberts & his Partner Charles .....the sum of fifty pounds Upon Trust that they pay the same to Treasurer for the time being of the Barnstaple and North Devon Dispensary also the sum of fifty pounds under the same conditions to the North Devon Infirmary which two sums of fifty pounds each I charge upon my Personal Estate and desire that it may be applied to the charitable use of the aforesaid Dispensary and Infirmary I give the sum of five pounds to each of the following institutions viz. Sunday School Bells School Benevolent Society & District Society I give one hundred pounds towards the endowment of my Brother Charles Roberts' Alms Houses besides what I have given in my lifetime I give and bequeath all my portion ... and interest in the furniture plate linen wine and china in the dwelling house wherein I now live unto my Sister Elizabeth Roberts for her life and at her death I give my moiety of it unto my Niece Julia Chanter I desire and direct all the several legacies to be paid at the expiration of six months after my death I give all the Rest and Residue of my Personal Estate and Effects subject to my debts funeral and testamentary expences and Legacies unto my Brother Charles Roberts and I hereby appoint Charles Roberts and Elizabeth Roberts Executors of this my last Will and Testament in witness my hand and seal I the said Jemima Roberts the Testator have to this my last Will set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and thirty four _ Jemima Roberts _ Signed sealed and published by the Testatrix as her Will in the presence of us _ Eliza J Watters _ John Davy
