Notices of Exeter: Comprising a history of royal visits to the ancient and loyal city,
from A.D. 49, to A.D. 1863
by
John Gidley
Exeter: Henry Besley, [1863] 106 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
This small book provides an account of the many royal visits to Exeter and is based, according to its author, on "memorials of ancient times" particularly with regard to visits in remote antiquity. Several of the visits were hostile and marked with blood, others were peaceful and happy. Exeter is a city with a very lengthy history, and was a place of consequence to royalty long before the Christian era. Much of the early material is taken from Oliver's History, with new material by Gidley taking the record of visits to the 1860's. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally by Google from a copy in the University of Wisconsin Library collection and can be downloaded from HathiTrust. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
