Recent Repairs to the Castle at Exeter

Trans. Devon. Assoc. Vol. XXVII. (1895), illus, plan, pp. 137-143.

by

Sir J. B. Phear, M.A., F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1895 Okehampton meeting. For the genealogist, it is a treasury of names and places associated with research into our county’s unique history. Rougemont, aka Exeter Castle, was built into the northern corner of Exeter’s Roman city walls shortly after 1068, following that city’s rebellion against the Norman Conqueror. It is mentioned in Shakespeare's Richard III with reference to his visit to Exeter in 1483. Today, the castle is a Scheduled Monument, with main structures as either Grade I or Grade II listed buildings. Sir John Budd Phear (9 February 1825 - 1905) was a judge and author, and was appointed 13th Chief Justice of Ceylon. His comprehensive obituary is available in GENUKI.  On return from Ceylon he resided at Exmouth, where he joined the Association, taking a keen interest in its activities. He frequently contributed to the ‘Transactions' and was elected President in 1886. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
