The Limestones of Westleigh and Holcombe Rogus

Trans. Devon. Assoc., 1879, Vol XI, illus., plan, pp. 433-441.

by

Rev. W. Downes, B.A., F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1879 Ilfracombe meeting. The article will be of particular value to genealogists with an interest in Devon’s geology. Its author was initially curate of Staverton, in the Deanery of Totnes, then curate of Kentisbeare. In 1885 he was presented, by E. S. Drewe, Esq., to the living of Combe Raleigh, near Honiton. He was an enthusiastic student of geology, especially that branch of the science relating to fossils, and read several papers at various times to the Geological Society, of which he was a Fellow. His obituary is available here in GENUKI. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
