This comprehensive botanical compendium was presented at the Association’s July 1882, Crediton meeting. The Glossary is a useful compilation of the scientific, commercial, and common names of Devon’s plants. For the genealogist, the paper, with its focus mainly on plants found in the general South Devon area is a treasure house of the names of early botanists engaged in plant collection and taxonomy. Section III of the Paper provides a complete index of all plants identified in the text. Section IV provides Notes for a Bibliography of Devonshire Plant Lore. The Glossary’s author was a Wesleyan minister and naturalist widely known for his book ‘Flowers and Flower Lore’. He was initially, in 1876, a missionary in China, due to ill health returning to England in 1880. With the view to recuperation, he served on circuits in several rural areas. The first was Newton Abbot, where he was able to spend much time in the open air. There he started practicing field botany. The Glossary, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
