Name Index to

Devon Fresh Water Algæ

by

Edward Parfitt

Trans. Devon Assoc. Vol.  XVIII. (1886), pp. 382-423.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1886, St. Marychurch meeting. Specimens listed in the catalogue as an appendix to the Paper were collected in specifically identified locations throughout Devon, particularly the Exeter area, by most of those individuals recorded in the index. For the genealogist, the paper is a cornucopia of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. The study of marine and freshwater algae is called either phycology or algology, depending on whether the Greek or Latin root is favoured. Algae are single cell organisms and are among the most important living things on Earth. They produce more oxygen than any other living substance. The author’s obituary is available in GENUKI. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
