Notes on Recent Notices of the Geology and Palæontology of Devonshire

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol VIII. (1876), illus., pp. 148-244.

W. Pengelly, F.R.S., F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1876, Ashburton meeting and provides for the genealogist, a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. The Paper’s author has provided critical comments and observations on a number of “Notices” related to the geology and palaeontology of Brixham’s (Windmill Hill) cavern and Kent's Hole Cavern at Torquay that had appeared in the professional and general literature during the year preceding the Ashburton meeting. His declared purpose was not to discuss nor give an opinion on any work or paper, as a whole, in which a particular "Notice" had appeared, but simply to correct, when it appeared necessary, any statements respecting Devonshire Geology, Palaeontology, or Anthropology. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
