The Ornithology Of Devonshire

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXIII. (1891), pp. 394-399.

by

William B. H. Pidsley.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1891 Tiverton meeting. For the genealogist, the paper is a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. Ornithology is the branch of zoology that deals with the study of birds. Almost of the early writings about Devon’s birds were more anecdotal than scientific. The classic current text on the topic is David G. Jenks, 2004 “A History of Devonshire Ornithology A Review of the Literature, Events and Personalities from Prehistoric Times to the End of the Twentieth Century”. Association member Pidsley lived at Blue Hayes House, Broadclyst, Exeter. His Paper is one of several contributions to the important topic and may be retrieved from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
