The Red Rocks of the South Devon Coast (1903)
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXXV, (1903), pp. 617-630.
by
Alex Somervail
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s 1903 Sidmouth meeting. The red rocks and red soil for which Devon is well known can be seen all along the cliffs of our county’s south coast. The vibrant rusty colour indicates their formation in the desert conditions that were a feature of the Triassic Period, 200-250 million years ago. The paper provides the genealogist with a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique Geology. The Paper’s author was a retired, relatively wealthy master stationer from Edinburgh, who had moved to Torquay in the early 1880s eventually becoming Honorary Secretary of the Torquay Natural History Society from 1890 to 1910. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
