Martinhoe

"A picturesque village on the coast of the Bristol Channel, 3 miles West of Lynton... Sir. Robert George Throckmorton, Bart. is lord of the manor & owner of a great part of the soil, and the rest belongs to C.Bailey Esq. & a few smaller owners. The Church (St. Martins) is an antique fabric with a tower & 2 bells." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

A parish in Shirlwell Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and Diocese of Exeter, 14 miles N.E. of Barnstaple, which had 235 inhabitants in 1831.
