Address of the President.

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXVI (1904), pp. 41-77.

by

Sir Alfred Croft, K.C.I.E.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Devonshire Association’s Presidential Address was delivered at its July 1904 Teignmouth meeting. On that occasion Sir Alfred spoke on "The Scenery of Devon in relation to its Geology”. His worthy objective was to awaken an interest in Devon’s landscape by showing that its characteristic features might, with a rudimentary knowledge of geological facts, be better understood as well as enjoyed. For the genealogist, the paper provides several of the important names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geology. The Association’s President for 1904, Sir Alfred Woodley Croft was an educationist and administrator who had spent most of his career in India. He, from 1877 until his retirement in 1897, was Director of Public Instruction in Bengal, and was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1884. On returning to England, he died at Tavistock in 1925. A potted biography with portrait is available in Wikipedia. Sir Alfred’s Presidential Address, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
