Perforated Stone Implement found in the Parish of Withycombe Raleigh
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 1890, Vol. XXII, illus., pp. 208-211.
by
T.N. Brushfield, M.D.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1890 Barnstaple meeting and provides the genealogist with a small treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique prehistory. While visiting a patient at Knowle, near Budleigh Salterton, one of the author’s professional predecessors noticed that the door of a neighbouring cottage was propped open by a curious-looking perforated stone. Believing it to be a historic implement, he gave the cottager a small sum for it. It had been found about 20 years previously while ploughing a field. The author, Thomas Nadauld Brushfield was an early ‘Alienist’ and author, who on retirement settled at Budleigh Salterton. He there studied and wrote about Sir Walter Raleigh’s career for the remainder of his life. In 1882 he became member of the Devonshire Association, was elected to its council in 1883, and was president in 1893–4. His obituary is available in GENUKI. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
