A compilation of the significant increases, or decreases in population since 1811,
transcribed by Alan Longbottom. © 2000

Note: Most Census returns between 1801 and 1831 amounted to little more than 'head counts'. This account (compiled in 1822) simply suggests reasons for local population changes, based on a comparison of those counts. Names of individuals were not recorded.

Bisley Hundred - Stroud Parish

The increase of the Population at Stroud is attributed to the flourishing state of the clothing trade.

St Briavells Hundred - Forest of Dean extra parochial

The population ascribed to the Forest of Dean 5,500 persons. A rail-way and the consequent extensions of coal mines has caused a considerable increase since the year 1811.

Chippenham Hundred - Kingswood Parish

The Parish of Kingswood is locally situate in Gloucestershire near Wickwar, The flourishing state of the fine woollen manufacture has attracted many strangers; and children finding profitable employment, marriages and population are greatly increased.
