The church has/had a graveyard.
It was founded before 1735. Originally this was Newton Chapel under St. Oswald's Church in Winwick In 1684 the chapel was destroyed by fire and upon being rebuilt was called St. Peters Church, Newton-le-Willows. The records prior to 1684 are in the records of St. Oswald's Church. Rev. William Tompson, an Oxford gradutate 1622, was curate of Newton Chapel from 1623 to 1635.
