A copy of the poll for the Knights of the Shire for the county of Cambridgeshire, taken on Thursday Sept. 14th 1780.

Candidates :- Lord Robert Manners [M], Hon. Philip Yorke [Y] (Whig party), Sir Sampson Gideon, Bt. [G]

Printed by Francis Hodson, Cambridge, 1780

The following extract is part of the "PREFACE".

The following lists require very little explanation. The hundreds are arranged alphabetically, as are the towns in the respective hundreds.

Each original Page consists of five Columns.

  • The first column contains the names of the freeholders, and the places where their freeholds are situated.
  • The second column give the places of abode of the non-resident freeholders, with the nature of the freeholds, "H" being put for house, "L" for land, and "H L" for house and land.
  • Third, fourth and fifth columns are the letters of the 3 candidates with a horizontal line to indicate who people voted for.

Note that only people who appear to live in Norfolk or places which are partly in both Norfolk and Cambridgeshire have been transcribed out of the 2635 voters.

[End of Poll Book]

Notes

  • 1. Emneth, Outwell (partly in CAM) and Upwell (partly in CAM) have been transcribed in full except for freeholders resident in Cambridgeshire.
  • 2. In the transcription of the Poll Book the modern spelling of place names has been added in brackets "()" to many of the entries so that a search will find them.
  • 3. The following list may help identify where some of the places are located :-
    • 1. Downham, Norf. is Downham Market but note there is also a Downham in Cambridgeshire.
    • 2. Weston is Weston Longville.
    • 3. Apart from Swaffham in Norfolk there is also "Swaffham Bulbeck" and "Swaffham Prior" in Cambridgeshire.
  • 4. Philip Yorke had the title "Viscount Royston" before he became 3rd Earl of Hardwicke in 1790.
