ELLASTONE

 

"CALWICH, a township in the parish of Ellastone, hundred of Totmonslow, in the county of Stafford, 7 miles to the N. of Uttoxeter. It is situated on the confines of Derbyshire, on the banks of the river Dove. This township was the site of a priory of the Dominican order, founded before 1148, and given by Henry VIII. to the monks of Merton, in Surrey. Calwich Abbey is the seat of C. Granville, Esq., and contains a good collection of paintings, including some family portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence."

"STANTON, a township in the parish of Ellastone, S. division of Totmonslow hundred, county Stafford, 3½ miles N.W. of Ashbourne, its post town. The village is small, and situated on a branch of the river Dove. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in the stone quarries, and in agriculture. The living is a curacy annexed to the vicarage of Ellastone, in the diocese of Lichfield. Archbishop Sheldon, founder of the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, was born here in 1598, and died in 1677."

"WOOTTON, a township in the parish of Ellastone, S. division of Totmonslow hundred, county Stafford, 4 miles S.W. of Ashbourn, and 7 N. of Uttoxeter. In this township is Wootton Hall, built by Inigo Jones."
