BUBWITH:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"BUBWITH, a parish in the Holme Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, in the East Riding of the county of York, 6 miles to the E. of Selby. It is situated on the banks of the river Derwent, and is a station on the Selby and Market Weighton branch of the North-Eastern railway. The parish contains the townships of Breighton, Foggathorpe, Gribthorpe, Harlthorpe, Spaldington, and Willitoft. The Derwent is here crossed by a stone bridge of ten arches, which was elected about 1793. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of York, worth £102, in the patronage of the lord chancellor and the Dean and Chapter of York alternately. The church, which has an embattled tower, is dedicated to All Saints. The Wesleyan Methodists have a chapel in the village. The charitable endowments for the benefit of the poor amount to £21 per annum. Nicholas de Bubwith, Bishop of Bath and Wells, who built part of Wells Cathedral and lies interred there, was a native of this village. He attended the Council of Constance in 1415, and died in 1424."

"FOGGATHORPE, a township in the parish of Bubwith, Holme Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, East Riding county York, 5 miles N. of Howden. At the time of the Norman Conquest it was called Fulcathorpe, and was given to the standard-bearer of William I. The Wesleyans have a chapel."


"GRIBTHORPE, a township in the parish of Bubwith, Holme Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, East Riding county York, 5 miles N.E. of Howden. The river Fooner flows through the township. Colonel Wyndham is lord of the manor."


"GUNBY, a township united with Breighton, in the parish of Bubwith, East Riding county York, 5 miles N.W. of Howden. It is situated on the river Derwent."


"HARLTHORPE, a township in the parish of Bubwith, Holme-Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, East Riding county York, 6 miles N. of Howden."


"SPALDINGTON, a township in the parish of Bubwith, Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, East Riding county York, 3 miles N.E. of Howden. It contains the hamlet of Spaldington Outside, and the Hall, an Elizabethan mansion, formerly the seat of the Vavasours."


"WILLITOFT, a township in the parish of Bubwith, Holme-Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, East Riding county York, 5 miles N. of Howden. It includes the hamlet of Gribthorpe."
