"FIRBECK, a parish in the S. division of the wapentake of Strafforth, West Riding county York, 4 miles S.W. of Tickhill, and 10 S.E. of Rotherham. Worksop is its post town. The Shireoak station on the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire railway is about 6 miles distant from the village, which is situated in a valley watered by a rivulet. The township of Stone is included in the parish The soil is generally fertile, and the scenery picturesque. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of York, value with that of Letwell, £150, in the patronage of the archbishop. The church is a small structure in the perpendicular style of architecture, dedicated to St. Peter. The charities produce about £5 per annum. There is a free school. Firbeck Hall, a handsome seat in a well wooded demesne, is the principal residence."
