In 1868, the parish of Carran contained the following places:

"CARRAN, a parish in the barony of Burren, in the county of Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles to the N. of Corrofin. A monastery is said to have been erected here by St. Columb. Limestone is abundant in the district, and some copper is found. The living is a vicarage united with that of Noughaval, in the diocese of Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh. The church has long been dilapidated. Columbkill Cottage is one of the chief residences.
