The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Baldongan contained the following places:

"BALDONGAN, (or Baldungan), a parish in the barony of Balrothery, in the county of Dublin, and province of Leinster, Ireland, 16 miles to the N.E. of Dublin. It is situated on the eastern coast of Ireland, and is a station on the Drogheda railway. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Dublin, Glendalagh, and Kildare, value £48, in the patronage of the Earl of Howth. This parish was the site of a fortress erected in the 13th century, which came into the possession of the Lords of Howth, and was dismantled by the royalists in the 17th century. There are remains of an old church with a ten-sided tower, not far from the site of the castle. It is conjectured to have been a church of the Knights Templars.
