The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Newcastle contained the following places:

"NEWCASTLE, a parish in the barony of Newcastle, county Dublin, province of Leinster, Ireland. Rathcoole is its post town. It is 4 miles long by 2 broad. The soil is mostly of first-rate quality. The road from Dublin to Limerick and the Grand canal pass through the parish. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Dublin, value £252, in the patronage of the archbishop. The village was nominally a borough, chartered in the time of James I., and sent two members to the Irish parliament before the Union. There is a dispensary within the Celbridge poor-law union. Within the parish are ruins of an ancient castle.
