The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Johnstown contained the following places:

"JOHNSTOWN, a parish and village in the barony of North Naas, county Kildare, province of Leinster, Ireland. Though occasionally denominated as a parish, it is ecclesiastically recognised as a townland in the parish of Kill, and diocese of Kildare. Palmerstown is the demesne of the Earl of Mayo; the other seats are Kerdiffstown, Forenaughts, and Furness. The village is seated on the Morell rivulet, 2 miles N.E. of Naas, on the road to Dublin. Here is a girl's school supported by the Countess of Mayo; also a police station, a good inn, and two flour-mills. Near Furness are the remains of an ancient chapel, and traces of a fortification."

"PALMERSTOWN, in the parish of Johnstown, a seat of the Earl of Mayo, county Kildare, near Naas, Ireland. It is situated near the Grand Canal."
