The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Clara contained the following places:

"CLARA, a parish in the barony of Gowran, in the county of Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Ireland, 4 miles E. of Kilkenny, its post town. It lies near the banks of the river Nore. The soil is good. The living is a vicarage annexed to that of St. John's, Kilkenny, in the patronage of the crown. Here is a Roman Catholic chapel and two day schools. The chief residences in the neighbourhood are Clara Castle and Clifden, the seat of Viscount Clifden."
