Two Chapels-of-Ease (to Lea Parish Church) were built in the town of Portarlington in the late 18th century. The church dedicated to St Paul was built to serve the French-speaking residents (who were of Huguenot French & Flemish descent) and was consequently widely referred-to as "the French Church". The other church, dedicated to St Michael, served the English-speaking residents and was known as "the English Church". The two congregations merged in the 1887, with St Pauls bcoming the main church and St Michaels becoming the Parish Hall.
