The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Dowth contained the following places:

"DOWTH, a parish in the barony of Upper Slane, in the county of Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles E. of Slane. Duleek is its post town. It is situated on the left bank of the river Boyne. The living is a curacy in the diocese of Meath, value with Duleek, £232, in the patronage of the Marquis of Drogheda. The church is in ruins. Within its walls are the tombs of the Netterville family. Castle de Lacy, now used as an orphan school and almshouses, was founded by the late Lord Netterville. This place is notable as being the scone of the principal movements in the battle of the Boyne. Dowth House is the seat of the Nettervilles; within the demesne is an extensive rath, and a tumulus, beneath which is an excavation where many relics have been discovered."
