The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Modeshil contained the following places:

"MODESHIL, a parish in the barony of Slievardagh, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 8 miles E. of Killenaule. Callan is its post town. The parish is 2½ miles long by 2 broad. The surface consists of very good land. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Cashel, value with Lismullen, £785, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is in ruins. There are likewise some castle ruins.
