Newton-upon-Ayr

Description and Travel

Newton upon Ayr was originally a burgh in it's own right on the north side of the River Ayr. In 1873, the Burgh and the Royal Burgh of Ayr merged. The main feature of the old burgh is the Georgian Steeple which stands as a traffic island at King Street.

An 1837 description of Ayr and neighbouring areas including Newton-on-Ayr and offering a listing of the key personalities of the town, is given in this extract from Pigot's Directory for Ayrshire. The transcript was provided by Keith Muirhead from the Sunshine Coast of Queensland.
