Help and advice for Scotland's Places

If you have found a problem on this page then please report it on the following form. We will then do our best to fix it. If you are wanting advice then the best place to ask is on the area's specific email lists. All the information that we have is in the web pages, so please do not ask us to supply something that is not there. We are not able to offer a research service.

Scotland's Places

ScotlandsPlaces provides a search across three national databases to access historical resources relating to places throughout Scotland. It is particularly useful for places which are problematical in some way, e.g. due to boundary changes. It also has links to other gazetteers. Hay Shennan (see below) provides information on the boundary changes that took place in Scotland in 1889.

For convenience, the counties can be selected from the list below.

  • On the county page, click on the "Refine by parish" link below the map to view a list of parishes within the county.
  • On the page which then appears, click on the parish name to view parish information and a diagrammatic view of the parish location.

County and Parish Boundary Changes, 1892

"Boundaries of Counties and Parishes in Scotland", by Hay Shennan, published by William Green and Sons, Edinburgh, 1892. Information on the boundary changes that took place in Scotland as settled by the Boundary Commissioners under the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889. Such changes affected the boundaries of counties, parishes, and burghs.
