Cilybebyll in the Swansea Valley

Cilypebyll, or Killybebill, is a parish 9 miles north-east from Swansea, and 5 north from Neath, in the Upper division of the county, Neath union and county court district, rural deanery of Gro Neath, archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff, and province of Canterbury; it is situated on the eastern side of the Swansea valley. The church of St. John is a very neat building of Welsh sandstone (rebuilt in 1860), in the Norman style, and consists of nave, chancel, with low castellated tower, in which are 3 bells. The living is a rectory, yearly value £135, with residence and 4 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Lord Bishop of Llandaff, and held by the Rev. John Jones, B. D., of St. David's College, Lampeter. There are National schools for boys, girls and infants, and a Sunday school, and an Independent chapel here. Collieries are worked here to some extent. Plas Cilypebyll is the residence of Herbert Lloyd esq., J. P., Richard Myers, esq. is the lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Herbert Lloyd, esq., H. Gwyn, esq., and J. Bruce Price, esq. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay or peat. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 4,014 acres; rateable value, £3,680 15s.; and the population in 1861 was 1,346.
