On Exposures of the Submerged Forest Clays at Paignton and Blackpool Beaches in April 1881.

Trans. Devon Assoc. vol. XIII, (1881), illus., pp. 344-350.

by

Arthur Roope Hunt, M.A., F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1881, Dawlish meeting. Ancient forests, found as tree-covered remnants along the foreshore all around Britain’s coast have long fascinated geologists and visitors. In Devon, reports were published in the Association’s Transactions as early as 1866 when William Pengelly revealed the lithology around Torbay’s developing Esplanade. Then, in 1869, Pengelly provided details of his field trip to Blackpool Sands. In 1881 these Ancient Forests of the South Devon Coast and Blackpool were studied by the present paper’s distinguished author. His extensive obituary is available in GENUKI here. For the genealogist, Mr. Hunt’s paper is a useful source of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geological history. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
