THORNBURY

"THORNBURY, a parish in the hundred of Black Torrington, county Devon, 5 miles N.E. of Holsworthy, its post town. The village is situated on the Bude canal and river Waldon. The soil is of a clayey character. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £198. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, contains effigies of the Edgecumbe family, and a brass of T. Brooke. The Wesleyans have a chapel and a Sunday-school. Miss Fowke and Mrs. Freer are ladies of the manor."
