"BODENHAM, a parish (anciently a market-town) in the hundred of BROXASH, county of HEREFORD, 8 miles (N. N. E.) from Hereford, containing 964 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford, rated in the king's books at £12. 1. 5., and in the patronage of R. Arkwright, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The river Lug winds through the parish. Here is a small endowed school. Walter Devereux, in 1379, obtained permission to hold a market on Tuesday, and a fair on the eve, day, and morrow of the Assumption of Our Lady, but they have been long discontinued. Thomas Mason, Esq., by will dated in 1773, gave nine acres of land, lying within the parish, directing the rental to be distributed among poor housekeepers not receiving parochial aid."
