The Ancient Parish of SKELTON

[Transcribed information from the early 1820s]

"SKELTON, a parish in the wapentake of Bulmer, the township of Skelton is a part in the liberty of St. Peter's and parish of Overton; 4 miles NW. of York. Here is a very beautiful ancient church, built in 1227, and dedicated to St. Peter; the living is a rectory, in the patronage of Mr. Hepworth, and the incumbent is the Rev. Thomas Place. Population, 273.

This Church is of considerable antiquity, and said to have been built with the stones that remained after the south cross of York minster had been finished by the archbishop, Walter Gray. Indeed the south door seems to resemble that of the cathedral; alike adorned with curious marble pillars, though now almost demolished. -Gent."
