BEDFORDSHIRE:
Bedfordshire Poll Book Holdings

The Act of 1696 provided that sheriffs were repsonsible for compiling a record of the poll of the county elections and that the returning officers should keep a record which was to be made available to anyone wishing to have access to it; a subseequent Act of 1711 confirmed the onus to maintain a record of the residence and freehold of electors, and stated that it should be handed over to the Clerk of the Peace for permanent preservation. It was not until 1834 that similar measures were passed for the preservation of borough election records. This did not stop the destruction in 1907 of the entire collection of the consequent poll books.

Constituency histories can be found in Seaton (1986), page 12. Links have been provided to Poll Book tanscriptions where available.
