A brief account of Ashton Church and some of the Chudleighs of Ashton

ASHTON lies in beautiful country on the Western slopes of Haldon. The scattered village is very attractive. The parish church (now St. John the Baptist: original dedication possibly St Nectan) is one of the most "atmospheric" village churches in Devon. It was begun before 1400 and completed with all its fittings by about 1485; and as it was restored at a late date (1900-5) it has conserved intact most of its ancient beauty. Below the church is Place (now called Lower Barton) where the Chudleigh family lived from the early 14th century until 1745). Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the New York Public Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
