Second Report of the Committee on Church Plate
by
Mr Harbottle Reed (Sec.)
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. XXXIX, (1907), illus. pp. 110-130.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The report was read at the Association’s July 1907 Axminster meeting. The Committee reported on the Church Plate of the Rural Deanery of Barnstaple. The rural deanery of Barnstaple consisted in 1907 of 24 parishes, of which 19 were ancient parishes and five were modern. An examination of its plate did not result in the discovery of any pre-Reformation examples, but in a very large proportion of the parishes the Elizabethan chalices with their covers were still in use. It was noted that all chalices were the work of Devonshire craftsmen. In the 19 ancient parishes there were 13 chalices of that period, all except one having their covers, and there was one odd cover. Another fine example of that period was lost by theft in the middle of the 18th century. The report is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
