General notes on this transcript:

a) Land Tax was recorded annually from 1780 to 1832. These transcripts only extracted information from the documents every 5-years. Intermediate years exist and can be consulted at the Devon Record Office.

b) Whilst these documents were clearly written, the names and places were recorded in a variety of spellings, all of which have been retained exactly as recorded. For example, in different years you will find the following surnames with spellings that might not be expected:

Bawdon – also recorded as Bawden and Badown
Buckingham – also recorded as Bockingham and Buckinham
Gilbert – also recorded as Jelbert
Heard – also recorded as Haerd and Hard
Hocking – also recorded as Hackin and Hockin
Hopgood – also recorded as Hupgod and Hoopgood
Jewell – also recorded as Jeull, Jewells and Jewill
Kivell – also recorded as Kivel, Kevill, Nancelhia, Nankevell and Nanckivell
Sharsell – also recorded as Charsel, Sharsill, Shersel, and Sherzel
And many others.

The same goes for property names, which appear in many different forms:

Dyke - appears as Dick
Heworthy - appears as Heuery, Hewry, Highworthy, Hughery, Hury and Huworthy
Huglepitt - appears as Hugelpit, Hughelpitt, Hugilpitt and Ogleypitt

c) Abbreviated first-names like Jno, Jas, Jos and Wm have been expanded to John, James, Joseph and William. Other first-names like Pitter (Peter) have been left as written.

d) Many entries were dittoed in the documents. These have been expanded to repeat the full names.

e) An attempt has been made by the transcriber to cross-reference the same properties together. Properties in the early Land Tax schedules were given a unique C### number. This has been carried forward to later records – see the ID# column. This exercise shows where properties changed ownership or occupiers; or were amalgamated or split into sub-sections.
This is not guaranteed to be fully accurate but is hoped to be of some benefit for researchers.
