This Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1897 Kingsbridge meeting. It is a treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geology, The Culm Measures are a thick sequence of geological strata that originated during the Carboniferous Period, from about 359.2 to 299 million years ago. These strata occur principally in south-west England, notably on Dartmoor. Radiolarians are open ocean, silica-secreting, zooplankton that occur abundantly in major oceanic sites worldwide. Their remains are an important constituent of “Culm” the limestone rock that distinguishes the Culm Measures. They are geologically important because they are indicators of such ancient water mass properties as temperature and salinity. Areas examined in this Paper are: (I.) Ilsington, near Bovey Tracey; (II.) Farley in the Teign Valley, north of Chudleigh; (III.) Ashton and its vicinity in the same valley; and (IV.) near Drewsteignton, at the north-east of Dartmoor. Co-author, geologist, and paleontologist George Jennings Hinde was an authority on fossil sponges. His potted biography may be accessed here. Howard Fox, FGS was a Falmouth shipping agent, widely regarded as an authority on the geology of Cornwall, with a particular interest in radiolarian cherts. His potted biography with portrait is available in Wikipedia. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
