"HALWELL, a parish in the hundred of Coleridge, county Devon, 6 miles S.W. of Totnes railway station, and 7 N.W. of Dartmouth. It contains the hamlet of Washbourne. The soil is clayey, and subsoil is dunstone. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Exeter, value £168, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. There is a National school for both sexes. The charities produce £6 per annum."
