Notes on the Geology of Okehampton
Trans. Devon. Assoc. Vol. XXVII. (1895), pp. 297-310.
by
R.N. Worth
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1895 Okehampton meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geology. The author provides a great deal of information in support of his 1888 hypothesis that present day Dartmoor is the remains of a massive volcano that once towered to above 18,000 feet; and which has over millennia been “gradually wasted and denuded by the forces of Nature”. The author, Richard Nicholls Worth (19 July 1837- 3 July 1896) was a celebrated geologist and historian of the City of Plymouth who devoted his spare time from work as a journalist, to investigating the history and geology of the Westcountry. He was twice Plymouth Association President, and in 1891 President of the Devonshire Association. His obituary is available in GENUKI. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
